General Description
The Asinua Ricefish, scientifically known as Oryzias asinua, is included in the O. woworae species group within the Adrianichthyidae family. Members of this species group possess distinct orange to deep red pigmentation on specific body parts, with live adult males exhibiting a prominent bluish sheen. O. asinua can be differentiated from related species by its slender body shape and unique coloration patterns.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal maintenance, Asinua Ricefish are best housed in a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate, dense vegetation patches, and open swimming spaces. Pieces of bogwood and twisted roots can serve as additional decor elements, while surface vegetation is appreciated by these fish. Providing such an environment not only enhances the display of their vibrant colors but also increases the chances of fry survival alongside adult fish.
Behaviour
The behavior of the Asinua Ricefish is not extensively documented; however, they tend to exhibit typical ricefish characteristics such as shoaling behavior and active swimming patterns. These fish are known to be peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with compatible tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
Although specific feeding habits are not described, like other ricefish species, the Asinua Ricefish is likely an omnivorous eater, consuming a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, algae, and commercial fish foods. They can be fed high-quality flake foods, small live or frozen invertebrates, and occasional vegetable matter to maintain their health and vibrancy.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism is evident in the Asinua Ricefish, with adult males displaying more vibrant colors, longer dorsal and anal fins, and a slimmer body shape compared to females. The genital papilla in males is short and slightly conical, while in females, it is bilobed. These fish are known to be egg layers, but detailed information on the breeding behavior of O. asinua is scarce.
Habitat and Distribution
The Asinua Ricefish is native to the Sungai Asinua in Asinua District, Sulawesi Tenggara (Southeast Sulawesi), Indonesia. In their natural habitat, these fish are found in clear, slow to fast-moving waters with a temperature around 26°C. They inhabit areas with mud, sand, and gravel substrates, often along the shores and in small marginal pools in floodplains, where they coexist with various sympatric species.
