Behaviour:
The Celebes Ricefish is generally peaceful but may not be an ideal addition to many community tanks due to its small size. If kept with other fish, diminutive species such as Microdevario, Trigonostigma, Pseudomugi, some Danio species, freshwater shrimp of the Caridina and Neocaridina genera, and most snails are suitable tankmates. It is recommended to keep them in groups of 8 or more for them to exhibit more confidence. Males can be aggressive towards each other during courtship, but they are mostly non-aggressive towards their own species. It is advised to maintain them alone if breeding is the goal to avoid potential hybridization with other Oryzias species.
Feeding and Diet:
The Celebes Ricefish is considered a micropredator, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they will accept appropriately sized dried foods but should also be offered small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, along with high-quality flakes and granules on a daily basis.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Breeding the Celebes Ricefish is relatively easy, with females capable of producing batches of eggs frequently. Males darken and defend territories during spawning while trying to attract females. The adhesive eggs are typically deposited among vegetation and have an incubation period of 1-3 weeks. Males are more colorful with longer fins and a slimmer body compared to females. It is essential to be cautious when housing juveniles of different ages together to avoid predation by older fish.
Habitat and Distribution:
The Celebes Ricefish is native to the Maros River in southwestern Sulawesi, Indonesia. They are found in slow-moving or standing waters, often in areas abundant with aquatic plants. The species has also been recorded in Lake Tempe, the Mota Talau River, and the East Timor state on the island of Timor. Their habitat may vary, with some waters flowing over limestone, while others do not exhibit such conditions.
Aquarium Setup:
The Celebes Ricefish thrives in a heavily planted aquarium with dark substrate, patches of dense vegetation, and some open areas. Additional decor like twisted roots, bogwood, and surface vegetation can be beneficial for the fish to display their best colors and offer a favorable environment for fry survival alongside the adults. Water parameters should be maintained within a pH range of 7.0-9.0, a temperature range of 23-27°C, and a hardness of 90-447ppm. A minimum tank size of 40 liters is recommended for keeping these fish.
