General Description
Oryzias eversi, commonly known as Evers' Ricefish, is a diminutive fish species belonging to the family Adrianichthyidae under the order Beloniformes. It is characterized by features such as pelvic brooding behavior in females and a dark color pattern in nuptial males, with a maximum size of 4.0cm.
Aquarium Setup
The ideal tank setup for Oryzias eversi includes a minimum tank size of 90 litres with water conditions consisting of a pH range of 6.0-7.5, hardness between 90-268ppm, and a temperature range of 18-24°C. The species thrives in a well-decorated aquarium with options such as sand substrate, water-worn tree roots, branches, leaf litter, or densely planted environments.
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful demeanor, Oryzias eversi is best kept with other diminutive fish species or freshwater shrimp of the genera Caridina and Neocaridina. However, it is recommended to keep them alone for breeding purposes to avoid potential hybridization risks. The species exhibits non-aggressive behavior towards conspecifics, except for minor sparring during mating, and tends to thrive in groups of 8 or more.
Feeding and Diet
Oryzias eversi has an unfussy diet and should be provided with appropriately sized foods. A suitable diet includes a mix of crushed or small-grade high-quality dried foods, live microworms, Artemia nauplii, and an algal component for adults. The species has been observed grazing from solid surfaces, indicating a natural diet variation.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The reproductive strategy of Oryzias eversi, known as "pelvic brooding," involves dominant males defending their territories during spawning, with females carrying and protecting the eggs using elongated pelvic fins. The species produces 20-30 eggs per spawning, which are carried by the female until hatching. Males display dark coloration in nuptial form, while females possess greatly-extended pelvic fins and lack the dark color pattern.
Habitat and Distribution
With a type locality in the Salo Sadang drainage area in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, Oryzias eversi is limited to this specific location. The species inhabits karst pools with still, transparent water, surrounded by rainforest, and temperatures around 21.5°C. It shares its habitat with species like Nomorhamphus sp. and Poecilia reticulata, where males are solitary, and females are found in groups near vegetation.
