General Description

The Wolasi Ricefish (Oryzias wolasi) was discovered in 2009 and is a member of the Oryzias woworae species group within the Adrianichthyidae family. It is characterized by a golden, relatively deep body with males displaying orange to deep red pigmentation on various fins. The species is best known for its distinctive coloration and ornamental value in the aquarium hobby.

Aquarium Setup

The Wolasi Ricefish thrives in a heavily planted aquarium setup with a dark substrate, patches of dense vegetation, open areas, twisted roots, and bogwood. This species appreciates surface vegetation and planted tanks increase the chances of fry survival alongside adults. Water conditions must be maintained within a temperature range of 23-27°C, a pH level of 7.0-8.0, and a hardness of 179-357ppm.

Behaviour

This species is known for its peaceful nature but may not be an ideal addition to all community tanks due to its small size. It tends to be non-aggressive towards its own kind, preferring groups of 8 or more individuals. When kept in groups, Wolasi Ricefish exhibit more confident behavior. Breeding pairs should be kept separate to avoid hybridization with other Oryzias species.

Feeding and Diet

The Wolasi Ricefish is an unfussy eater but requires a varied diet of crushed or small-grade, high-quality dried foods supplemented with live foods such as microworms, Artemia nauplii, or similar options. Adult Wolasi Ricefish have been observed grazing on solid surfaces, indicating a potential requirement for an algal component in their diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Wolasi Ricefish is relatively easy, with females capable of laying eggs frequently. Spawning typically occurs in the morning, with males displaying territorial behavior. Male Wolasi Ricefish are more colorful with elongated fins, while females have a rounder body shape. Males have a conical genital papilla, whereas females have a bilobed papilla.

Habitat and Distribution

The Wolasi Ricefish is native to four localities in the Regency of South Konawe, Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is found in freshwater streams with mud, rocks, and plant debris substrates. The species thrives in water with a pH range of 7.5-8.5, conductivity of 40-120 μS/cm, and temperatures between 21.5-28.5°C. Wolasi Ricefish are endemic to Sulawesi and are part of the diverse Oryzias species found in the region.
