General Description
Akysis Hendricksoni is a small, nocturnal micropredator belonging to the Siluriformes order. It is a uniquely patterned catfish species, typically displaying yellowish bands or blotches on a brown background, with variations based on collection localities. These fish are known for their specific morphological features, including the structure of their head, body depth, and caudal fin shape.
Aquarium Setup
To set up an aquarium for Akysis Hendricksoni, a soft, sandy substrate is recommended as they enjoy burrowing. Decorate the tank with water-worn rocks, driftwood, and branches to provide hiding spots. While aquatic plants are not common in their natural habitat, adding plants like Anubias or moss species can enhance the environment. Regular water changes, high oxygen levels, and good water movement are crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Akysis Hendricksoni is nonaggressive towards other fish, making them suitable tankmates for miniature schooling cyprinids and smaller Danio/Rasbora species. They can be kept singly or in groups and are generally peaceful. These catfish prefer a tranquil environment and may spend time buried in the substrate or squeezed into crevices between rocks.
Feeding and Diet
Primarily nocturnal micropredators, these catfish feed on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton. They may be picky eaters initially but can learn to accept small live or frozen foods like Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms. Feeding after dark allows them to exhibit natural feeding behavior, and regular feeding schedules are essential for their health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction in Akysis Hendricksoni is largely unreported, with sporadic accounts of successful spawning events under specific conditions. Sexual dimorphism has been observed in related Akysis species, with variations in anal and genital structures between males and females. These differences in morphology provide insights into sexing these catfish in a mature state.
Habitat and Distribution
These catfish are native to swiftly-flowing streams and rivers throughout Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. They inhabit substrates of sand, gravel, and rocks in clear to slightly turbid water conditions. Found in specific river drainages, Akysis Hendricksoni coexists with various sympatric fish species and is adapted to specific environmental parameters for optimal health.
