General Description

The Akysis Portellus, a member of the Akysidae family, is a nocturnal micropredator found in swiftly-flowing streams in southern Myanmar. This species exhibits distinct physical characteristics, with cryptic color patterning and tuberculate skin. Classified under Siluriformes, these fish possess venom apparatus and typically reach sizes of up to 4.3cm.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank size of at least 40 liters is recommended. A soft, sandy substrate is crucial as these fish often bury themselves. Providing water-worn rocks, driftwood, and crevices for hiding is beneficial. Although they inhabit waters devoid of aquatic plants, adding species like Anubias and moss can enhance the tank environment.

Behaviour

Akysis Portellus is non-aggressive and suitable for community tanks with small, peaceful species. They are not competitive towards conspecifics and can be kept singly or in groups. These fish thrive in clean water with high oxygen levels and moderate water movement.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily nocturnal feeders, Akysis species consume small aquatic crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton. While they may be picky eaters initially, offering live or frozen foods like Artemia and bloodworms is recommended. Feeding after dark allows them to exhibit natural feeding behaviors.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in Akysis Portellus remains unreported, although successful spawning events in related species have been observed. Sexual dimorphism has been reported in other Akysis species, with distinct physical differences between males and females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Sittaung River system, these fish prefer clear to slightly turbid waters with sandy substrates. They dwell in fast-flowing streams without aquatic plants but may use leaf litter or submerged structures. The specific distribution of Akysis Portellus within the Sittaung drainage remains uncertain.
