General Description
The Alestopetersius Brichardi, also known as the cherry red Congo tetra, is a lively and somewhat skittish fish that showcases peaceful behavior, making it an ideal resident for larger community aquariums. This species, often traded under various names, is a member of the Alestidae family and can reach a maximum size of 8.0cm. With males being more colorful than females, displaying extended fins and brighter hues especially during nuptial displays, the cherry red Congo tetra adds visual interest to an aquarium setup.
Aquarium Setup
To create an optimal environment for Alestopetersius Brichardi, the aquarium should mimic a flowing stream or river with elements like variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, water-worn boulders, and driftwood roots providing hiding spots. A planted tank works well for this species, but it is crucial to maintain open swimming spaces. Regular water changes, with at least 20-30% of the tank volume weekly, are essential for the long-term health of these sensitive fish. See the provided water conditions for specific requirements.
Behaviour
The cherry red Congo tetra is known for its lively behavior, often engaging in interesting interactions, particularly among rival males competing for females' attention or hierarchical positions within the group. When housed in a community aquarium with suitable tank mates, they contribute to a more natural and vibrant aquatic spectacle. In nature, these tetras are typically found alongside comparably-sized cyprinids and other alestids, showcasing their peaceful nature.
Feeding and Diet
Wild cherry red Congo tetras are natural foragers, feeding on small insects, crustaceans, and fallen fruits. In captivity, they readily accept a diet comprising small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules. Including some food with plant or algal content is beneficial for their overall health. Offering small insects like crickets or fruit flies after feeding them fish flakes or vegetables can be a suitable dietary addition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Adult male cherry red Congo tetras exhibit brighter colors and have extended fins compared to females. During the breeding season, males intensify their hues. Females also develop extended median rays in the caudal fin, but their fins are notably shorter. Adding both males and females to the aquarium, ideally in a group of 8-10 individuals, can lead to interesting behaviors such as breeding displays and hierarchy establishment within the group.
Habitat and Distribution
The specific distribution of Alestopetersius Brichardi includes the middle Congo and its tributaries, such as the Busira and Ruki rivers, with potential occurrences in nearby areas like the Republic of Congo. Their type locality is Yangambi on Lake Yandja, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Maintaining water conditions within the specified pH range of 5.0-7.0, hardness between 18-179ppm, and a temperature range of 20-28°C is crucial for replicating their natural habitat successfully.
