General Description
The Boulenger's Featherfin Tetra, scientifically known as Bryconaethiops Boulengeri, is a rarely imported species that adds attractiveness to a community of larger peaceful fish. This tetra is commercially farmed for food in its native countries and belongs to the Alestiidae family. With a maximum size of 25.0cm, it thrives in rivers and lakes in the Congo river basin in Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with being found in Lake Tanganyika.
Aquarium Setup
The Boulenger's Featherfin Tetra requires a minimum tank size of 255 litres and thrives in water conditions with a pH range of 6.0-8.0, hardness of 3-20°dH, and a temperature range of 22-26°C. It is recommended to provide a good water flow and adequate oxygenation in the tank. While the choice of decor is not critical, a substrate of sand, driftwood branches, and smooth rocks can enhance the tank's aesthetics, leaving plenty of open swimming space for the tetras (see table).
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful nature, the Boulenger's Featherfin Tetra coexists well with larger peaceful fish and prefers companionship with similarly-sized characins, robust cichlids, Loricariids, and other bottom dwellers like Polypterus species. Being a shoaling species, it is advised to keep them in groups for their well-being.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Boulenger's Featherfin Tetra enjoys a varied diet comprising live, frozen, and dried foods. They particularly relish prawns and live earthworms, making them essential components of their diet to ensure their optimal health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
