General Description

The African Tiger Fish, scientifically known as Hydrocynus Vittatus, is a voracious piscivore originating from Africa, boasting a streamlined and muscular body structure. With visible dagger-shaped teeth that interlock for tearing prey, it is a top predator among freshwater species. Reaching an impressive size of up to 105.0cm, it is a popular game fish in its natural habitat and can weigh up to 28 kg (62 pounds).

Aquarium Setup

For housing the African Tiger Fish, a minimum tank size of 2400 litres is essential, with requirements for well-oxygenated and high-quality water. The tank setup should be minimal, possibly featuring a sandy base due to the fish's speed and power. Specific water conditions mandate a pH range of 6.5-8.0, a temperature between 24-28°C, and a water hardness of 5-25°dH (see table).

Behaviour

Due to its predatory nature, the African Tiger Fish is best kept alone or with similarly sized conspecifics to avoid harm to other tank mates. Reports suggest they could be kept with larger fish like Loricariids and cichlids when young; however, caution is advised as smaller companions risk being attacked without warning.

Feeding and Diet

As a piscivore, the African Tiger Fish is known for preying on live fish in the wild. Contrary to common belief, they can be transitioned to consuming whitebait and other dead foods relatively easily.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Limited information exists on the breeding of African Tiger Fish in captivity. Successful breeding would necessitate an enormous aquarium due to their size. Sexual dimorphism remains unknown in this species.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, African Tiger Fish are widespread across Africa, found from Egypt to South Africa. They primarily inhabit large lakes and rivers, including locations like Tanganyika.
