General Description

The Betta Akarensis, known for lending its name to the close-related Betta akarensis group, is a species with distinguishing characteristics such as a yellow eye when alive and specific fin ray and scale counts. Belonging to the most speciose genus within Anabantidae, Betta species have adapted to various environments, from stagnant ditches to acidic peat swamp forests, with the Betta Akarensis found on the island of Borneo.

Aquarium Setup

The Betta Akarensis thrives in a setup that includes driftwood, roots, branches for shade, clay plant pots for shelter, and dried leaf litter for a natural feel and microbe colonies. Aquatic plant species like Microsorum and Taxiphyllum are suitable, and soft, acidic water conditions with dim lighting are preferable. Maintaining a tank with access to humid air above the water surface and a gentle air-powered sponge filter is recommended for this species.

Behaviour

Due to its care requirements and disposition, the Betta Akarensis is best kept alone or with very peaceful species, as larger or more vigorous fish may intimidate it. While it can coexist with small cyprinids and other anabantoids with ample space and hiding places, cautious research is advised. In a group setup, minor squabbles are expected, especially during spawning when females, in particular, can display aggression.

Feeding and Diet

In its natural habitat, the Betta Akarensis preys on insects and invertebrates, occasionally consuming small fish. In captivity, a varied diet including live or frozen foods like Daphnia and Artemia is ideal for color and condition enhancement. Feeding small crickets or fruit flies after filling their stomachs is recommended, with caution against overfeeding to prevent obesity in Betta species.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The Betta Akarensis is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate tank for breeding purposes. Courtship involves the male wrapping around the female for egg and milt release, followed by mouthbrooding and fry release by the male after an incubation period. Males exhibit larger size, extended fins, and more iridescent scaling than females, with a stockier head profile for brooding.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to Borneo, the Betta Akarensis is found in clear streams with flowing water, blackwater environments, and roadside ditches. Its habitat features shade, riparian vegetation, minimal dissolved mineral content, and acidic, leaf-strewn substrates. Distributed across Brunei and Sarawak, this species is recognized by collectors to maintain pure bloodlines and accuracy in localities.
