Behaviour

The Slender Betta is not suited for standard community aquariums due to its care requirements and disposition, making it best kept alone or with very peaceful species to avoid intimidation from larger or more vigorous tankmates. Some small cyprinids can be suitable tankmates, and it may coexist with other anabantoids given enough space; however, thorough research before acquiring is essential. There are mixed reports on whether it can be kept in multiple pairs or harem-type groups, with observations ranging from occasional squabbling to sustained aggression towards conspecifics by dominant individuals.

Feeding and Diet

Stomach analyses of wild Slender Bettas reveal a diet primarily focused on insects, particularly damsel fly larvae, which they hunt at the water's surface. They are known to be avid jumpers, leaping out of water to catch prey from overhanging structures. In captivity, they readily accept dried foods but should be regularly offered small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or chironomid larvae to maintain optimal color and condition. Care should be taken not to overfeed as Betta species are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Slender Bettas are bubble nesters, and providing ample cover for the female is crucial during breeding. The male constructs the nest, typically under a broad leaf or among surface vegetation, and initiates spawning in an 'embrace' typical of anabantoids. After spawning, the female should be removed as the male guards and tends the nest. The eggs hatch in 24-48 hours and the male cares for the young until they are free-swimming. Interestingly, raising fry alongside parents can cease spawning behavior among adults.

Habitat and Distribution

Originally recorded in heavily-vegetated forest swamps in Malaysia, the Slender Betta is now found mainly in peat swamp forests, black water streams, and freshwater swamp forests. Their habitats are characterized by dense vegetation, low light penetration, darkly stained water with negligible mineral content, and acidic pH levels as low as 3.0 or 4.0. Slender Bettas often coexist with other Betta species such as B. tussyae, B. waseri, B. livida, and more in various regions of Malaysia and Sumatra.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, Slender Bettas can be housed in a fully-decorated aquarium without substrate, incorporating driftwood, clay plant pots, and dried leaf litter for cover and shelter. They thrive under dim lighting, in acidic water with low hardness, and require gentle filtration to mimic their natural sluggish habitats. Aquatic plants like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Cryptocoryne species can be added, along with floating vegetation. Tank covers should be tight-fitting, leaving space for occasional humid air access above the water surface.
