Behaviour
The Ornate Ctenopoma is known for its slow-moving nature, making it prone to being out-competed during feeding times; hence, it thrives best when housed with peaceful, smaller species like hatchetfish, lampeyes, corydoras, and small loricariids. In a species tank, these fish excel, showcasing their stunning colors. Male Ornate Ctenopomas may exhibit aggression towards each other, notably during spawning periods.
Feeding and Diet
Ornate Ctenopomas primarily thrive on a diet rich in small frozen or live foods, displaying reluctance towards accepting dried food options. To ensure their nutritional needs are met, a varied diet is essential for their overall health and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Ornate Ctenopomas can be challenging but rewarding. These bubble nesters require a dimly-lit, well-planted aquarium with soft, acidic water for successful spawning. Males diligently construct small bubblenests among floating vegetation or beneath broad leaves. Following spawning, the male guards the nest until hatching, which usually occurs within 24 hours. Optimal care for the fry includes feeding them infusoria initially, then transitioning to brine shrimp nauplii after the first week. Males, distinguished by their larger size, vibrant colors, and white-edged anal and dorsal fins, exhibit clear sexual dimorphism.
Aquarium Setup
Ornate Ctenopomas thrive in densely planted tanks with ample floating cover and dimly lit, stained water, mimicking their natural habitat near riverbanks dense with vegetation. A minimum tank size of 70 litres is recommended, with peat filtration proving beneficial for maintaining water quality. Due to their tendency to escape, ensuring the tank is adequately covered is crucial.
Habitat and Distribution
Natively found in the River Congo basin, spanning parts of both the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ornate Ctenopoma also reportedly has a feral population on Madagascar. These fish prefer habitats with slow-moving waters and dense vegetation, reflecting their natural inclination towards sheltered environments.
