General Description

There are only two described species in the genus Sandelia, with the Eastern Cape Rocky being one of them. These species have limited natural ranges in South Africa and are isolated from other anabantoids. Sandelia spp. are considered the most primitive among anabantoids due to their less developed labyrinth organ. The conservation status of the Eastern Cape Rocky is endangered, with efforts in place to preserve the species, including captive breeding and reintroduction programs.

Aquarium Setup

The Eastern Cape Rocky should be kept alone in a setup replicating its natural biotope. The tank requires a sandy substrate with scattered smooth rocks, mimicking its habitat. Adequate water flow and high oxygenation levels are crucial. Utilize an external canister or internal power filter, directing the outlet for optimal water circulation.

Behaviour

Due to its conservation status, it is recommended to keep the Eastern Cape Rocky alone to prevent disease transfer, aggression, or other detrimental factors. The species is known to be predatory, positioning itself in quieter marginal zones with rocky substrates to prey on smaller fish and aquatic invertebrates.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Eastern Cape Rocky feeds on smaller fish, aquatic invertebrates, and crabs. In captivity, they adapt well to various meaty foods such as bloodworms, prawns, mussels, and earthworms. Offering a diverse diet is essential to their health and well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Eastern Cape Rocky is challenging due to its endangered status. In captivity, males select and defend a spawning site, darkening in color during courtship. Males display bubble blowing and aggressive behavior towards females before spawning in an embrace. The adhesive eggs are laid on the substrate, and the male guards the brood post-spawning. Males exhibit brighter colors compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to select river systems in the southeastern Cape of South Africa, the Eastern Cape Rocky prefers stream habitats with rocky substrates and areas featuring adequate water flow. As their natural habitats face various threats, conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and restore their populations in the wild.
