General Description
The Blue Phantom Plec, scientifically classified as Hemiancistrus sp., is a captivating species within the Loricariidae family. With various color forms based on collection locality, it stands out as one of the most visually appealing Loricariids in the aquarium trade. The true classification of this fish remains uncertain, with speculation linking it to Hemiancistrus subviridis, also known as the green phantom plec (L200).
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care of the Blue Phantom Plec, a tank size of at least 108 litres is recommended. Setting up the aquarium to mimic its natural habitat in the flowing waters of the northern Rio Orinoco drainage involves a stream-type configuration with a gravel or sand substrate, rounded stones, and rocks. While it can also adapt to a planted tank, the species thrives in well-oxygenated water with a moderate current, but live plants may struggle under such conditions.
Behaviour
When housed in a community tank, the Blue Phantom Plec proves to be a suitable choice, requiring its own refuge to avoid territorial conflicts, especially if multiple individuals are present. In a biotope setup, suitable tankmates include characins like Anostomus, Hemiodus, Semaprochilodus, Metynnis species, and reophilic cichlids such as Retroculus and other Loricariids that share similar environmental preferences.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding primarily on aufwuchs and small aquatic crustaceans in the wild, the Blue Phantom Plec showcases an omnivorous diet in captivity. This species readily accepts sinking dried foods, vegetable matter like blanched spinach or spirulina, and live/frozen foods such as bloodworm or daphnia, providing a diverse feeding regime to support its health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While there is limited information on the breeding behavior of the Blue Phantom Plec in captivity, it is believed to be a cave-spawning species due to its natural habitat preferences. Sexual dimorphism in this species remains unknown, adding to the mystery and intrigue surrounding its classification and breeding habits.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the northern Rio Orinoco drainage in Venezuela, the Blue Phantom Plec thrives in habitats with rocky substrates in flowing waters. Its natural distribution is limited to this specific region, reflecting its adaptation to unique environmental conditions and ecosystem dynamics.
