General Description
The Golden Vampire Plec, scientifically known as Leporacanthicus Heterodon, is a member of the Loricariidae family within the Ancistrinae subfamily. It derives its common name from its unique upper jaw dentition, featuring two prominent teeth or "fangs" whose exact function remains unclear. This species is identified by its territorial behavior towards benthic species, especially those sharing similar color patterns, necessitating ample space in communal settings.
Aquarium Setup
The Golden Vampire Plec necessitates a spacious aquarium of at least 108 liters, preferably with a sandy substrate and ample hiding spots provided by large pieces of driftwood and smooth rocks. Dim lighting, oxygen-rich water, and efficient filtration to manage the substantial waste output are crucial. Water conditions for this species include a pH range of 6.0-7.0, hardness of 3-10 dH, and a temperature between 22-26°C (see table).
Behaviour
This species generally exhibits peaceful behavior towards tankmates in other areas of the aquarium. Suitable companions in a biotope setup include larger characins, reophilic cichlids, and other Loricariids with analogous requirements. When housed in a group, the Golden Vampire Plec may display territorial tendencies towards similarly patterned benthic species, highlighting the necessity for spacious accommodations.
Feeding and Diet
Despite not being predominantly herbivorous, the Golden Vampire Plec accepts sinking dried foods and relishes meatier options like earthworms, prawns, mussels, bloodworms, and snails, which is an unusual dietary preference among Loricariids. Ensuring a varied diet is vital for their overall health and vitality.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
There is limited information available regarding the breeding of the Golden Vampire Plec in the aquarium hobby. Males of this species exhibit sexual dimorphism, with mature individuals distinguished by a broader head, larger dorsal fin, and more numerous odontodes compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
Indigenous to the Rio Xingu basin in Brazil, the Golden Vampire Plec thrives in reophilic habitats characterized by fast-flowing waters, such as rapids. Its natural environment influences its preferences for oxygenated water and suitable tank conditions conducive to its well-being.
