General Description

The Three Beacon Plec, also known as Leporacanthicus Triactis, is part of the Loricariidae family, specifically Ancistrinae. With a maximum size of 24.5cm, this fish boasts various color forms, showcasing orange patterning in its fins that remain vibrant even in maturity. Commonly referred to as "vampire plecs," these species possess a unique upper jaw dentition with two prominent teeth or "fangs." Their distinct features include a small bony growth on the head.

Aquarium Setup

To house the Three Beacon Plec successfully, a minimum tank size of 243 liters is essential. It is recommended to furnish the tank with a sandy substrate, ample hiding spots, driftwood, and smooth rocks to create territories. Dim lighting, oxygen-rich water with moderate to high flow, and a robust filtration system to handle waste are crucial. Water conditions ranging from 2-15°dH hardness, pH levels of 6.0-7.6, and temperatures between 24-27°C are optimal. (see table)

Behaviour

Considered territorial, especially among males, Three Beacon Plecs require sufficient space and defined territories to coexist peacefully. They exhibit compatibility with characins, South American cichlids, and catfish like Corydoras and Loricariids. In setups with high water movement, suitable tankmates include Anostomus, Hemiodus, Retroculus, or African Steatocranus.

Feeding and Diet

These fish prefer a diet rich in meaty foods such as live or frozen bloodworms, mussels, prawns, as well as sinking dried foods. They also consume algae and plant matter, benefiting from occasional green feedings like cucumber or courgette to ensure a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While the Three Beacon Plec has not been bred in captivity, it reproduces in nature by spawning in deep riverbank crevices during the wet season. Mature males display sexual dimorphism with larger heads, dorsal fins, and more odontotes compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Upper Orinoco basin spanning Colombia and Venezuela, the Three Beacon Plecs thrive in reophilic environments characterized by rapid, rocky waters and driftwood snags. Their distribution is primarily limited to these regions in South America.
