General Description
The Black Ghost Knifefish, scientifically known as Apteronotus albifrons, belongs to the Apteronotidae family and the speckled knifefish group. Considered a true bony fish, it can grow over one foot in length and possesses a weak electrical organ at the caudal peduncles to locate food.
Aquarium Setup
The Black Ghost Knifefish requires a minimum tank size of 1200 liters with excellent filtration, typically a minimum of 150 gallons. It thrives in a fine-gravel-bottom tank with plenty of roots and rocks for hiding, subdued to dark lighting, and a "ghost tube" for viewing. They can coexist with larger, peaceful species but may show aggression towards similar-sized or smaller fish.
Behaviour
Tending to be timid and reclusive, Black Ghost Knifefish can become very tame and trusting once acclimated, even allowing for handling. Their semi-aggressive temperament requires careful consideration when selecting tank mates to avoid conflicts.
Feeding and Diet
As a carnivorous species, the Black Ghost Knifefish enjoys a varied diet, including live foods, chopped earthworms, and frozen or flaked options. Providing a diverse diet is essential for their health and well-being.
