General Description
The Yellow Shrimp Group, scientifically known as Neocaridina davidi, is a freshwater invertebrate species that is a color variation of the Red Cherry Shrimp. These shrimp are vibrant yellow in color, adding a striking visual appeal to any peaceful freshwater aquarium. They are valued for their efficient algae-eating habits, making them beneficial members of the aquarium ecosystem.
Aquarium Setup
Yellow Shrimp thrive in freshwater aquariums with good filtration and water quality. A planted tank with ample food sources and hiding spots is ideal for their well-being. The recommended tank size for keeping Yellow Shrimp is a minimum of 15 litres. Water conditions should have a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0, a KH range of 3-10, and a temperature range of 17.8-23.3°C.
Behaviour
Yellow Shrimp are known for their peaceful temperament, making them suitable tankmates for a variety of aquatic species. In aquariums, they are diligent scavengers, constantly foraging for algae, detritus, and leftover food. They are highly adaptable and will adjust well to various tank conditions, provided that their basic requirements are met.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Yellow Shrimp have a versatile diet that includes algae, detritus, and any leftover fish food. In cases where food sources are scarce, supplementing their diet with algae tablets, quality flake food, or pellets is recommended to ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In optimal conditions, Yellow Shrimp are prolific breeders. A male and female pair will likely reproduce in the aquarium. Female Yellow Shrimp carry fertilized yellowish eggs under their tails until hatching, which typically occurs after around 30 days. The newborn shrimp closely resemble miniature adults and can feed on the same diet as the mature shrimp.
Habitat and Distribution
Yellow Shrimp are commonly found in aquariums worldwide due to their vibrant coloration and algae-eating abilities. In the wild, they typically inhabit freshwater bodies with adequate vegetation for shelter and food sources. Their adaptability to various water conditions has made them a popular choice among aquarists looking to add color and functionality to their setups.
