General Description
The Red Cherry Shrimp, scientifically known as Neocaridina denticulata sinensis, is a stunning freshwater invertebrate species that adds both visual appeal and functional benefits to peaceful aquariums. With a vibrant red coloration, these shrimp serve as an attractive ornamental addition while actively foraging on algae and organic debris, contributing to the cleanliness of the tank.
Aquarium Setup
The Red Cherry Shrimp thrives in freshwater aquariums with good filtration and water quality, particularly excelling in planted tanks that offer ample food sources and hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 15 litres is recommended, with ideal water conditions including a pH range of 6.6-7.0, a water hardness (KH) of 3-10, and a temperature range of 15.6-26.7°C (see table).
Behaviour
Displaying a peaceful temperament, Red Cherry Shrimp are known to coexist well with other tank mates in a community setup. When provided with a suitable environment, these shrimp are active foragers, constantly scouring surfaces for algae and leftover food.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Red Cherry Shrimp have a varied diet that includes algae, detritus, and excess fish food. To supplement their diet, feeding them algae tablets, quality flake food, or pellets is recommended, especially if natural food sources are limited in the aquarium.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In conducive conditions, a male and female Red Cherry Shrimp in the same aquarium are likely to breed. The female carries yellowish eggs under her tail until they hatch in approximately 30 days. The offspring, resembling miniature adults, can be nourished with the same food as the adults. Providing a breeder aquarium with a sponge filter can enhance the survival rate of the young shrimp.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to regions like Taiwan and Korea, Red Cherry Shrimp are commonly found in freshwater habitats with vegetation, where they can scavenge for food and seek shelter. Their adaptability has made them popular in the aquarium trade around the world.
