General Description

The Chocolate Cherry Shrimp, Neocaridina sp., is a peaceful freshwater shrimp species known for its eye-catching chocolate red coloration. Belonging to the Atyidae family, these omnivores can grow up to 4.5cm in size.

Aquarium Setup

Chocolate Cherry Shrimp thrive in aquariums with good filtration, water quality, and especially in planted tanks where food and shelter are abundant. A minimum tank size of 15 litres is recommended for keeping a group, and for breeders, a tank of at least 10 gallons is suggested. Avoid copper-based medications and housing them with larger carnivorous species like loaches and puffers.

Behaviour

These shrimp are peaceful and purposeful in their pursuit of algae and organic debris, making them an invaluable addition to any aquarium cleanup crew. They are known to breed readily in suitable conditions and can carry a clutch of eggs under their tails until hatching.

Feeding and Diet

As omnivores, Chocolate Cherry Shrimp consume algae, detritus, and leftover food. In case of insufficient natural food sources, supplement their diet with algae tablets, quality flake food, or pellets to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

In well-maintained aquariums with the presence of male and female shrimp, breeding is likely to occur. Females carry eggs until hatching, with newborn shrimp resembling miniature adults. To boost young shrimp survival, breeding tanks with sponge filters are recommended.

Habitat and Distribution

Chocolate Cherry Shrimp are highly adaptable and can be kept in most freshwater aquariums that maintain a temperature range of 17.8-27.8°C. They do best in habitats with a pH of 6.0-8.0 and a water hardness of 3-10 kH. Originating from freshwater habitats, these shrimp have gained popularity in the hobby due to their striking coloration and practical benefits in tank maintenance.
