General Description
The False Jaguar Catfish, scientifically known as Liosomadoras Morrowi, is often mistaken for its counterpart L. oncinus due to its less vibrant patterning. Typically reaching a maximum size of 15.0cm, this species thrives as a bottom dweller within larger community aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
For an optimal aquarium setup for the False Jaguar Catfish, a South American biotope tank is recommended. It is advisable to house them with similarly-sized characins, peaceful cichlids, Corydoras sp., and Loricariids. Although they may exhibit territorial behavior, providing ample hiding spaces allows for the peaceful cohabitation of multiple False Jaguar Catfish in a sufficiently sized tank of at least 110 litres.
Behaviour
Displaying a peaceful and shy demeanor, False Jaguar Catfish are known to consume small fish under the cover of darkness. These nocturnal creatures require dim lighting in their habitat to feel secure.
Feeding and Diet
False Jaguar Catfish are unfussy eaters, relishing live and frozen foods like bloodworms, earthworms, and sinking dried foods. To ensure they receive adequate nourishment, feeding them after lights out is recommended.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of the False Jaguar Catfish is yet to be documented in aquarium conditions. Internally fertilized, males can be distinguished by their extended anal fin, which serves a similar function to the gonopodium found in livebearers.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, False Jaguar Catfish are commonly found in the Río Ucayali basin in Peru, dwelling in the main river and its tributaries. These freshwater fish thrive in water conditions with a hardness of 2-10 dH, pH levels between 6.0-7.0, and a temperature range of 20-25°C.
