Behaviour:

Badis pyema is a fish that should be emphasized for captive reproduction due to its rarity in the hobby. It is not gregarious and can exhibit aggression towards other males, especially in smaller tanks. It is recommended to maintain this species alone or in a group with ample space for each male to establish a territory. Clever placement of caves can help in reducing aggression, with tankmates needing to be chosen carefully to ensure the Badis pyema is not outcompeted for food. Peaceful cyprinids and smaller Rasbora species are suitable tankmates for this species.

Feeding and Diet:

Badis pyema are micropredators that feed on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and other zooplankton. They may be picky eaters and may not accept dried foods readily, although some individuals can be trained to eat them over time. Regular meals of small live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, or glassworm are essential for optimal coloration and conditioning. Avoid feeding them chironomid larvae (bloodworm) and Tubifex as these can lead to obesity and make them more susceptible to diseases.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Breeding Badis pyema in captivity is achievable with the correct tank setup. They are cave spawners that form temporary pair bonds. Rival males become combative during breeding, displaying courtship behavior towards females. After spawning, males take sole responsibility for guarding the eggs and fry, displaying paternal care. Females are smaller with duller patterning and a rounder body profile, while males develop extended finnage as they mature.

Habitat and Distribution:

Badis pyema is known from the Putao area in Kachin state, northern Myanmar. They inhabit fast-flowing, clear streams with rocky substrates and dense marginal vegetation. Sympatric species include Batasio tengana, Devario, Microdevario, Barilius, and other fish species.

Aquarium Setup:

For a well-maintained aquarium for Badis pyema, include a structured setup with a sand or gravel substrate, water-worn rocks, and ample cover for the fish. You can add plant species like Microsorum or Anubias, driftwood, floating plants, and leaf litter for a natural environment. Provide cave-like structures for potential spawning sites, including half-coconut shells or upturned clay pots. Maintain water conditions with temperatures between 15-25°C, pH of 6.5-7.5, and hardness of 18-90ppm.
