General Description

Dario urops is a tiny fish species classified under the order Perciformes. It was first described in 2012, although it was initially discovered in the late 19th century by Day in the Western Ghats of southwestern India. This species can be distinguished by features such as a black blotch on the caudal peduncle, a horizontal suborbital stripe, and unique vertebrae counts. Belonging to the Badidae family, Dario urops is part of the genus Dario, which also includes other miniature species.

Aquarium Setup

In aquarium settings, Dario urops should be provided with a subdued lighting environment and ample hiding spots using plants, driftwood, and rocks. A sandy substrate mimicking its natural habitat is ideal for this species. Water parameters ideally include a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C), pH between 6.5-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (see table).

Behaviour

Noted for their shy and deliberate feeding behavior, Dario urops are micropredators that feed on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton. They tend to be cautious eaters in captivity. These fish exhibit some sexual dimorphism, with mature males developing extended pelvic, dorsal, and anal fins.

Feeding and Diet

In captivity, it is recommended to feed Dario urops small live or frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, grindal worms, and microorganisms. Avoid feeding them chironomid larvae (bloodworm) or Tubifex as this can lead to obesity and make the fish more prone to disease.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Limited information is available on the reproductive behavior of Dario urops. However, males are known to develop extended fins as they mature. Further studies may provide insights into their breeding habits and dimorphic characteristics.

Habitat and Distribution

Dario urops is primarily found in the Valapattanam river system in southern Karnataka, southwestern India. Additional populations have been recorded in Agumbe and the Cauvery River headwaters in northeastern Kerala. These fish prefer slow-moving waters with tree roots and leaf litter, where they can often be found among such structures.

Etymology

The genus name Dario is derived from the Bangla name "Darhi," while the species name urops comes from the Greek words for "tail" and "eye," in reference to the prominent eye spot on the caudal peduncle of this species.
