General Description
Hemibagrus planiceps is a species of catfish belonging to the family Bagridae. It is characterized by a moderate to large adult size and a strongly-depressed head shape with a flat or slightly convex interorbital region. This species can be found in the upper parts of river basins in western Java, Indonesia, preferring clear, fast-flowing habitats with rocky or sandy substrates. Adult H. planiceps can grow up to 26.3 cm in length.
Aquarium Setup
Hemibagrus planiceps should be housed in a tank with a generous swimming area, hiding spots like caves or rocks, and a substrate of sand or small gravel. It is essential to provide a well-maintained filter system and perform regular water changes. For specific water parameters (see table).
Behaviour
In their habitat, H. planiceps displays typical catfish behavior, being primarily nocturnal and secretive. They may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics.
Feeding and Diet
Although in the wild H. planiceps feed on crustaceans and small fish, in captivity, they are easily maintained with high-quality commercial sinking pellets. It is important not to feed them live foods unnecessarily.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Males of Hemibagrus planiceps can be distinguished by their elongate genital papilla, which reaches the anal-fin origin. During the breeding season, males may exhibit more intense coloration.

The type locality of Hemibagrus planiceps is Java, Indonesia, and it is found in various river systems in western Java. The species thrives in the upper parts of river basins with clear, fast-flowing waters and rocky or sandy substrates.
