General Description

The Asian Red Tailed Catfish (Hemibagrus Wyckioides) is a species belonging to the order Siluriformes and the family Bagridae. This freshwater fish is known for its aggressive territorial behavior, large size reaching up to 130.0cm, and a lifespan of several decades. It is primarily a predator, feeding on crustaceans and smaller fishes in the wild.

Aquarium Setup

For tank setup, the Asian Red Tailed Catfish is likely to prefer dim lighting and access to refuges such as driftwood, large rocks, or plastic piping. A large aquarium of at least 10000 litres with an enormous filtration system is essential to accommodate this species. Water conditions should be maintained with a pH range of 6.0-8.0, hardness of 36-357ppm, and a temperature of 19-29°C.

Behaviour

This species displays aggressive territorial tendencies and is usually incompatible with other fish in smaller aquariums. Even in larger installations, caution should be exercised as it may attack tank mates. Despite its ferocious behavior, the Asian Red Tailed Catfish seems unafraid of humans, requiring careful handling during maintenance activities.

Feeding and Diet

In captivity, juvenile Hemibagrus Wyckioides readily accept live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, and various dried foods. Adults can be fed earthworms, prawns, mussels, white fish flesh strips, and sinking pellets. While juveniles need a high-protein diet, adults can thrive on 1-2 meals per week, avoiding mammal meats like beef heart or chicken to prevent health issues.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of the Asian Red Tailed Catfish in aquariums is not commonly documented, with commercial production achieved through hormone treatment. Incubation periods have been observed, with fry measuring around 5mm TL initially. Males can be distinguished by the presence of an elongate genital papilla located anterior to the anal fin.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively, the Asian Red Tailed Catfish is found in the Mekong River system across China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, as well as the Chao Phraya drainage in Thailand. It inhabits main river channels, including whitewater rapids, and migrates locally into flooded forests during the wet season from July to October.

Etymology

The genus name Hemibagrus is derived from the Greek word 'hemi' meaning 'half,' combined with the generic name 'Bagrus'.
