General Description
The Black Collared Catfish, scientifically known as Horabagrus Nigricollaris, is a rare species within the genus Horabagrus and closely resembles the more common H. brachysoma. This catfish can reach a maximum size of 30.0cm and is usually sold in the aquarium trade as juveniles, around 2-3 inches in length. It is characterized by distinctive black shoulder markings that extend over the top of the body, resembling a dark collar.
Aquarium Setup
For housing the Black Collared Catfish, a minimum tank size of 243 litres is recommended due to its potential adult size. The tank should be equipped with dim lighting as this species is nocturnal, and provide refuges such as bogwood, beech branches, rocks, or plastic piping to create hiding spots. A large, efficient filter is essential to manage the biological waste produced by the fish. Considering its origin in hill streams, maintaining a good water flow with high oxygen content is crucial.
Behaviour
This catfish species is known to be peaceful for its size and can thrive in a community tank with other placid, similarly-sized fish. However, it will prey on any tankmate that fits in its mouth, so caution is advised when selecting tank companions. Black Collared Catfish typically do not engage in conflicts with conspecifics and can be kept either singly or in small groups.
Feeding and Diet
Black Collared Catfish are generally easy to feed, accepting a variety of dried and meaty frozen foods. A balanced diet can include dried pellets, frozen prawns, mussels, and earthworms. It is recommended to offer food during the night as they are secretive feeders. Ensuring that the catfish receive an adequate share of food is important, especially in a community tank setting.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information about the reproduction of Horabagrus Nigricollaris in aquarium settings is currently unrecorded. Sexual dimorphism in this species remains unknown, requiring further observation and research to distinguish between male and female individuals.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Chalakudy River in the state of Kerala, south-western India, the Black Collared Catfish inhabits the stream-like headwaters of the Chalakudy drainage. It thrives in environments with a water hardness ranging from 5-25°dH, pH levels between 5.5-7.5, and temperatures of 23-25°C.
