General Description
The Two Spot Mystus (Mystus bimaculatus) is a charming species that thrives in peaceful community tanks. With a maximum size of 6.5cm, this fish is known for its adaptability and graceful presence in aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
A well-suited tank for the Two Spot Mystus, ideally with a minimum size of 40 litres, should include dense planting, driftwood, rocks, and possibly peat substrate (see table). Floating plants can be added to diffuse light and encourage visibility. While the fish prefer soft, acidic water with a pH range of 4.0-6.5, they can also tolerate more alkaline conditions.
Behaviour
This species is extremely peaceful and can coexist with smaller fish, making it compatible with a wide range of small to medium-sized species. Keeping them in small groups enhances their sociable nature, especially when with conspecifics. In their natural habitat, they are found alongside rasboras, glass catfish, and gouramis.
Feeding and Diet
The Two Spot Mystus is an uncomplicated eater that readily accepts small live, frozen, and dried foods. To keep them healthy and vibrant, provide a varied diet that promotes their best colors.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While this species has been successfully bred in captivity with hormone injections, a natural spawn necessitates specific conditions like very acidic water, zero hardness, and a peat substrate. Female Mystus bimaculatus tend to have a rounder belly compared to males. Distinguishing males have a small genital papilla near the anal fin, mimicking a single fin ray.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to Sumatra in Indonesia, the Two Spot Mystus inhabits peat swamps, emphasizing the species' vulnerability to human-induced habitat destruction. Conservation efforts and captive breeding initiatives play crucial roles in preserving this species.
