General Description
The Asian Upside Down Catfish, scientifically known as Mystus Leucophasis, is a species belonging to the Bagridae family. This catfish species is characterized by spending most of its time swimming in an inverted position and is distinguishable by its uniform black coloration with possible lighter flecking on larger specimens. It can grow up to 30.0cm in size and is recommended for aquariums with a minimum size of 430 liters. Endemic to Myanmar, it is commonly mistaken for Synodontis nigriventris due to its initial small size when available for purchase but can be discerned by its unique patterning and coloration.
Aquarium Setup
The tank setup for the Asian Upside Down Catfish does not emphasize decor; however, it is essential to provide hiding spots like a large flowerpot on its side or PVC piping for shelter. Water conditions should maintain a hardness of 5-20°dH, a pH range of 6.0-8.0, and a temperature between 23-27°C.
Behaviour
Asian Upside Down Catfish are known to exhibit robust behavior and can sometimes display territorial aggressiveness towards tankmates, particularly smaller fish. They are compatible with larger, more active species like tinfoil barbs, Apollo sharks, and large cichlids. It is advisable to keep only one specimen unless the tank size is significantly large, as they are generally intolerant of their own kind.
Feeding and Diet
Being unfussy feeders, Mystus Leucophasis readily accepts a varied diet comprising live, frozen, and dried foods. To ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration, it is recommended to provide a diverse diet to meet their nutritional requirements.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While reproduction of the Asian Upside Down Catfish in aquarium settings is uncommon, commercial breeding occurs in fish farms within the Far East. Sexual dimorphism is evident in this species, with males possessing a noticeable genital papilla in front of the anal fin. Fully grown females typically feature a larger and rounder body compared to males.
Habitat and Distribution
