General Description

An irregularly imported species, Mystus Rhegma, is relatively unknown in terms of natural behavior but is regarded as an excellent choice for peaceful catfish in larger community tanks. With a maximum size of 12.0cm, this Bagridae species hails from Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, inhabiting rivers and flooded areas, including fields.

Aquarium Setup

For Mystus Rhegma, a tank size of at least 80 litres is recommended. While the decor is not critical, providing hiding spots is essential. Long-leaved plants like Vallisneria mimic its natural habitat, and covering the surface with floating plants helps reduce the light reaching the substrate. Water conditions should ideally maintain a pH of 6.5-7.5, a hardness of 8-15°dH, and a temperature of 22-26°C (see table).

Behaviour

Mystus Rhegma is known to be a peaceful and sociable species. However, as adults, they may consume small fish. They thrive as bottom dwellers in communities with larger, tranquil fish like rasboras, barbs, anabantoids, and peaceful cichlids. Keeping them in small groups within a sufficiently spacious tank enhances their well-being.

Feeding and Diet

Like other members of its genus, Mystus Rhegma is an adaptable feeder that accepts a variety of small live, frozen, and dried foods. Maintaining a diversified diet is recommended to ensure their nutritional needs are met adequately.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Mystus Rhegma in aquarium settings has not been documented. Male specimens can be differentiated by a relatively long genital papilla located just in front of the anal fin.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Mystus Rhegma can be found in rivers, flooded regions, and fields across Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. Their preference for such environments influences their tank setup requirements to replicate these conditions accurately.
