General Description: Hemimyzon Nanensis is a species within the family Balitoridae, primarily recognized by its combination of physical characteristics. It holds a unique position among related genera due to the absence of a sucking disc on its pelvic fins, distinguishing it from most congeners. Endemic to the upper Mae Nam Nan river basin in northern Thailand, this species showcases specific traits that set it apart from its relatives.

Aquarium Setup: To ensure a suitable habitat for Hemimyzon Nanensis, it is essential to maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with a turnover rate of 10-15 times per hour. The tank should contain a base substrate of gravel or sand mixed with water-worn rocks and pebbles. Aged driftwood can be added, while aquatic plants like Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias spp. can thrive. Strong lighting is crucial to promote algae growth, a vital component of the species' diet. Regular water changes are necessary, and a secure cover is recommended due to the species' climbing behavior.

Behaviour: Known to exhibit peaceful behavior, Hemimyzon Nanensis can be territorial towards conspecifics, emphasizing the importance of keeping them in groups of four or more for their well-being. While generally peaceful, suitable tank mates should be carefully selected to meet the species' environmental requirements and avoid potential conflicts.

Feeding and Diet: In their natural habitat, Hemimyzon Nanensis feeds on benthic algae and micro-organisms. In captivity, they accept a diet of high-quality dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and specially formulated gelatin-bound homemade foods rich in vegetables and Spirulina. Maintaining a mature aquarium with ample algae-covered surfaces is crucial for their long-term health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism: Information on the reproductive behavior and sexual dimorphism of Hemimyzon Nanensis is currently unrecorded, requiring further observation and study to understand its breeding habits and potential physical distinctions between genders.

Habitat and Distribution: Restricted to the upper Mae Nam Nan river basin in northern Thailand, Hemimyzon Nanensis thrives in shallow, fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters with substrates of rocks, sand, and gravel. These habitats are characterized by biofilm-covered surfaces, devoid of aquatic plants but featuring riparian vegetation and submerged leaf litter. The species cohabitates with various fish species like Nemacheilus pallidus and Schistura menanensis, showcasing a diverse aquatic ecosystem.
