General Description

Homaloptera Confuzona, also known as the "lizard loach," is a species of fish characterized by its yellowish to reddish-brown body with irregular dark bars. This species is often found labeled incorrectly in the aquarium trade due to its unique markings.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal aquarium setup for Homaloptera Confuzona, a clean and well-oxygenated environment is essential. A minimum tank size of 160 liters is recommended, with a turnover rate of 10-15 times per hour. Utilizing an over-sized filter along with additional powerheads and airstones can help achieve the desired water flow and oxygen levels. The tank substrate can consist of gravel, sand, or a mix of both, complemented by water-worn rocks, pebbles, driftwood, and aquatic plants like Microsorum and Anubias spp. Regular water changes are crucial, and a secure cover is necessary as these fish are known to climb glass surfaces.

Behaviour

Homaloptera Confuzona is not considered aggressive, but its specific requirements can limit suitable tankmates. In the wild, these fish are known to live in groups, exhibiting interesting interactions and positioning themselves facing the water flow at certain times. Keeping them in groups of six or more promotes bolder behavior compared to when they are kept alone or in smaller groups.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily specialized grazers, Homaloptera Confuzona feeds on biofilm, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates. In captivity, offering live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms is essential for their health. These fish may also accept sinking dried foods, but a diet rich in live or frozen foods is preferable.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the reproductive behavior of Homaloptera Confuzona in aquarium settings is scarce. Sexually mature females typically exhibit a slightly larger and fuller-bodied appearance compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

Homaloptera Confuzona is typically found in swiftly-flowing streams and headwaters with clear, oxygen-rich water. They prefer habitats with substrates of gravel, rocks, and boulders covered in algae and biofilm. These fish are commonly located in the Mekong River basin, including parts of Laos, Cambodia, and southern Thailand.

Distribution

The distribution range of Homaloptera Confuzona primarily includes the Mekong River basin downstream of the Khone waterfalls in Laos and Cambodia. They are also known to inhabit smaller river drainages in southern Thailand, particularly within the Mae Klong system.
