General Description

Originally classified by Fowler in 1940, the Homalopterula Gymnogaster is a small loach species known for its distinctive features such as a truncated caudal fin and entirely naked medial under surface of the abdomen. The species is often found living in aggregations in its natural habitat, displaying interesting interactions between individuals and a bold behavior when kept in groups of six or more.

Aquarium Setup

To successfully house the Homalopterula Gymnogaster, a well-oxygenated and clean environment is essential. An oversized filter is recommended to achieve a turnover rate of 10-15 times per hour. The tank should include a substrate of gravel or sand with water-worn rocks and pebbles. Driftwood roots and branches, along with aquatic plants like Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias species, can be added for a more natural habitat. Stable water conditions are crucial, and regular partial water changes are necessary for the health of the species.

Behaviour

While the specific behavior of the Homalopterula Gymnogaster remains unconfirmed, observations of related species suggest that it is not aggressive in a community setting. These loaches, adapted for life in fast-flowing water, use their specialized morphology to cling to solid surfaces, appearing to crawl and hop over rocks. In aquariums, they tend to arrange themselves close to one another, facing the water flow at specific times of the day.

Feeding and Diet

Homalopterula Gymnogaster is a specialized grazer feeding on biofilm, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they may accept sinking dried foods, but a diet rich in live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms is essential for their well-being. A tank with algae growth and aufwuchs is highly preferable for their diet and health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There is no recorded information on the reproduction of Homalopterula Gymnogaster. Sexually mature females are likely to be slightly larger and fuller-bodied than males, suggesting sexual dimorphism within the species.

Habitat and Distribution

Primarily found in Sumatra, Indonesia, Homalopterula Gymnogaster inhabits highland regions, including riffles and quiet waters like lakes. It's unique for a Homaloptera species to be associated with standing water bodies, although the exact collection points of these fish remain unclear beyond the outflowing rivers or lakes in which they are found.
