General Description

The Sparkling Gourami, scientifically known as Trichopsis pumilus, is a captivating freshwater fish characterized by its petite size and striking appearance. With a golden body accented by iridescent red flecks and fins adorned with blue and green spots, this gem of an aquarium fish adds a touch of elegance to any tank. Belonging to the Belontiidae family, this peaceful species originates from the shallow rice patties of Thailand and Cambodia, where it thrives in low water level conditions with reduced oxygen levels. Despite its beauty, this fish typically grows up to about 1-1/2 inches and is best suited for aquariums of at least 10 gallons in size.

Aquarium Setup

To ensure the well-being of Sparkling Gouramis, it is recommended to provide them with an aquarium that includes a variety of live plants, rocks, or driftwood for hiding spots. Dark substrate or slightly tinted water can enhance the fish's coloration, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment. These fish can coexist peacefully with tankmates of similar size and temperament, although males may exhibit territorial behavior towards each other. Therefore, it is advisable to keep them with non-aggressive companions. For optimal care, maintaining water conditions within a pH range of 6.0-7.0, a temperature between 22.2-25.6 degrees Celsius, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 4-8 is recommended.

Behaviour

Known for their peaceful demeanor, Sparkling Gouramis are generally non-aggressive towards tankmates, making them suitable for community aquariums. Males can display territorial behavior towards each other, but they tend to be timid around more aggressive fish. Their small size and calm nature contribute to a harmonious tank dynamic, allowing them to thrive in a variety of setups.

Feeding and Diet

As omnivores, Sparkling Gouramis require a balanced diet consisting of both algae-based foods and meaty treats. Feeding them a combination of algae-based flakes, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp ensures they receive essential nutrients for optimal health. Providing a diverse diet helps mimic their natural feeding habits and supports their overall well-being in captivity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Distinguishing between male and female Sparkling Gouramis can be challenging, with the only reliable method being to observe the ovaries of the female under bright light. During breeding, males build bubblenests and exhibit courtship behavior by flaring their fins and tails. Following spawning, it is essential to separate the female to prevent aggression from the male. Male Gouramis diligently care for the eggs until hatching, requiring diligent attention to water quality, especially during the developmental stages of the fry.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to Thailand and Cambodia, Sparkling Gouramis inhabit shallow rice patties where they can thrive in low water levels and oxygen-deficient conditions. Their natural habitat influences their adaptability to confined spaces and specific environmental parameters, making them well-suited for aquariums that mimic these characteristics. By replicating their native environment, aquarists can provide a comfortable and enriching setting for these vibrant freshwater fish.
