General Description

Leptobotia Rubrilabris, commonly known as the Red-finned Loach, belongs to the family Botiidae under the classification order Cypriniformes. This species is endemic to China and northern Vietnam, primarily found in the middle and upper sections of the Yangtze River in provinces like Sichuan and Hunan. With a maximum size of 15.0cm, these loaches are characterized by possessing a laterally-compressed body, a deep caudal peduncle, and unique fin placements.

Aquarium Setup

The Red-finned Loach thrives in aquarium setups designed to mimic a flowing stream. The tank should have a substrate of rocks, gravel, and water-worn boulders. Additional decor like driftwood, roots, branches, and PVC piping for cover can be beneficial. Hardy plant species like Microsorum and Anubias can be attached to the decor, with bright lighting encouraging aufwuchs growth. It is crucial to maintain spotless water conditions, high dissolved oxygen levels, and adequate water movement in the tank. A mature aquarium with stable water parameters is essential for the well-being of this species.

Behaviour

This species is unlikely to exhibit aggression but may intimidate smaller fish due to its size and active behavior. It is advised to avoid pairing them with slow-moving, long-finned species and instead opt for peaceful but robust open water-dwelling cyprinids as tankmates. Red-finned Loaches are sociable animals that form complex social hierarchies; therefore, keeping 3-4 individuals is recommended to prevent dominance-related stress and aggression.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Red-finned Loaches are benthic predators that hunt insects, crustaceans, and smaller fish. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet comprising live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish/earthworms, and high-quality sinking dried foods. Providing a diverse diet ensures the nutritional needs of these loaches are met and promotes their overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Leptobotia Rubrilabris has not been recorded in aquarium settings. Sexual dimorphism is unknown, but it is presumed that females will be heavier-bodied once they reach sexual maturity. Further observations are necessary to understand the reproductive behaviors and physical distinctions between male and female Red-finned Loaches.

Habitat and Distribution

Red-finned Loaches prefer clear, well-oxygenated, running water habitats with substrates of rocks, gravel, and boulders. They are commonly found in river channels, headwater streams, and occasionally in lakes and reservoirs affected by human activities like dam construction. These loaches are native to the Yangtze River in China and have also been documented in the Lo River drainage in northern Vietnam, facing challenges like habitat degradation and pollution due to human interventions.
