General Description

Parabotia Bimaculata, a species within the Botiidae family, is a riverine loach native to southwest China. It is characterized by a body with 12-15 dark vertical bars, two dark markings at the base of the caudal-fin, and dark spots on the dorsal and caudal fins. The species can reach a maximum size of 14.0cm and is best maintained in groups in an aquarium setup resembling a flowing stream.

Aquarium Setup

To replicate its natural habitat, a tank for Parabotia Bimaculata should feature rocks, gravel, and water-worn boulders. Additional elements such as driftwood, roots, branches, and hardy plants like Microsorum and Anubias can be included. The fish requires spotless water, high oxygen levels, and decent water movement. External filters and powerheads are recommended to maintain stable water conditions.

Behaviour

Parabotia Bimaculata is not aggressive but might intimidate smaller fish due to its size and active behavior. It should not be kept with slow-moving, long-finned species that may have their fins nipped. Suitable tankmates include peaceful cyprinids, loaches, catfish, and some botiids. The species tends to be peaceful with conspecifics and thrives when housed in a group of 3-4 individuals.

Feeding and Diet

Being opportunistic predators, Parabotia Bimaculata feeds on insects, crustaceans, and fish fry in the wild. In captivity, they accept a varied diet of live or frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, shellfish, earthworms, and quality dried foods. Regular feeding and a diverse diet are recommended to maintain their health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Parabotia Bimaculata is unrecorded in aquaria but presumed to be seasonal in nature. Sexual dimorphism is evident in mature females being heavier-bodied than males. The species likely engages in migratory spawning behavior in its natural habitat.

Habitat and Distribution

This species originates from Luxian in Sichuan province, China, where it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated, running waters with rocky substrates. Its distribution beyond the type locality remains uncertain due to limited documented records. Parabotia Bimaculata prefers diverse aquatic environments, ranging from small headwater streams to larger river channels.
