General Description
The Parabotia Lijiangensis, a member of the Botiidae family, is a small loach species growing up to 8.3cm. Typically found in clear, well-oxygenated, running water habitats, this species features distinct characteristics such as large scales, vertical bars on its body, and a forked caudal fin with dark markings.
Aquarium Setup
To recreate its natural habitat, an aquarium for the Parabotia Lijiangensis should mimic a flowing stream with rocks, gravel, and boulders on the substrate. Including driftwood, roots, branches for shaded areas, and hardy plants like Microsorum and Anubias is recommended. Adequate water movement and oxygen levels are vital, necessitating the use of external filters and powerheads. Water conditions should be maintained at a pH of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 90-357ppm, and a temperature of 20-24°C (see table).
Behaviour
While generally peaceful with conspecifics, the Parabotia Lijiangensis might intimidate smaller fish due to its size and active behavior. It is advised to avoid slow-moving, long-finned species as tankmates and opt for peaceful cyprinids, loaches, and catfish instead. Maintaining 3-4 specimens is recommended to promote group dynamics within the tank.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, this species is likely an opportunistic feeder, preying on insects, crustaceans, and fish fry. When kept in captivity, the Parabotia Lijiangensis accepts a varied diet comprising live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, earthworms, and quality dried foods.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While breeding behavior remains unrecorded in aquarium settings, it is presumed that the Parabotia Lijiangensis is a seasonal spawner in its natural environment. Sexually mature females are expected to be heavier-bodied compared to males.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Li River drainage in southern China, exact distribution details of the Parabotia Lijiangensis beyond this region are scarce. It thrives in well-oxygenated, running water, and is commonly found in riverine habitats with rocky or gravelly substrates.
