General Description

The Syncrossus Hymenophysa, commonly known as the Green Tiger Loach, is a species within the Botiidae family, characterized by a dark spot in the dorsal fin and 12-15 vertical body bars with bluish borders. They exhibit a unique, sickle-shaped anterior process on the premaxilla, distinguishing them from other botiid genera. These loaches display intricate social hierarchies, often forming groups of at least 5 to 6 specimens.

Aquarium Setup

To house the Green Tiger Loach, a tank size of at least 300 litres with a well-structured setup is essential. Consider incorporating smooth rocks, driftwood, and pebbles in a natural-style arrangement. These loaches enjoy exploring their environment, so ample hiding spots with plants like Microsorum and Anubias are beneficial. Maintaining well-oxygenated water with a degree of flow is crucial for their health, along with weekly water changes of 30-50% tank volume.

Behaviour

The Syncrossus Hymenophysa can display belligerent behavior, especially towards smaller or slow-moving fish species. They are social creatures, forming complex social hierarchies, and should be kept in groups to prevent aggression. Dominance battles among individuals can lead to a phenomenon known as "greying out," affecting their body patterning and coloration. These loaches communicate through audible clicking sounds and possess sharp spines that erect when stressed.

Feeding and Diet

Chiefly carnivorous, the Green Tiger Loach also consumes vegetative matter, making it an unfussy eater. Offering a varied diet comprising quality dried products, live or frozen bloodworms, and fresh fruits and vegetables is crucial for their nutrition. They may also prey on aquatic snails but should not be considered a solution to an infestation. Care should be taken to avoid overfeeding and provide a balanced diet to maintain their health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

These loaches appear not to have been successfully bred in captivity, indicating a possible seasonal and migratory spawning behavior in the wild. Sexual dimorphism in Syncrossus Hymenophysa is highlighted by adult females being stockier and potentially larger than males. While further distinctions in dimorphism are yet to be documented, females' growth and body size differences are noticeable traits.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Musi River basin in South Sumatra, Indonesia, the Green Tiger Loach is also found in other regions of Sumatra, Malaysian states of Sarawak and Perak, and West Kalimantan on Borneo. Syncrossus Hymenophysa inhabits various water bodies from small streams to main river channels and lakes, displaying migratory behavior during the wet season. They prefer habitats with submerged structures like tree branches and roots, indicating their adaptability to diverse aquatic environments.
