General Description

The Flagtail Catfish, scientifically known as Dianema Urostriatum, is a peaceful fish suitable for community tanks. It is native to parts of the Brazilian Amazon basin, found in slower-moving creeks, tributaries, floodplain lakes, and ponds. This species can grow up to 12.5 cm in size and thrives in a minimum tank size of 140 litres. It is a hardy and adaptable species once acclimated, ideal for larger community setups.

Aquarium Setup

For a biotope tank, the Flagtail Catfish thrives in sandy substrate with driftwood, roots, and dried oak or beech leaves scattered over the base. Alternatively, a heavily-planted tank with ample cover will also suit its needs. Water conditions should be maintained at a pH level of 6.0-8.0, a temperature of 25-28°C, and a hardness of 5-20°dH.

Behaviour

This species is exceptionally peaceful, making it suitable for a variety of tankmates, including small Amazonian species like tetras, peaceful cichlids, Corydoras, and smaller Loricariids. It shows no aggressiveness towards conspecifics and may even swim in shoals midwater when kept in a small group of 3-6 fish. While it may consume tiny fry, the Flagtail Catfish generally poses no threat to smaller tankmates.

Feeding and Diet

Flagtail Catfish are unfussy eaters and accept a varied diet of dried sinking pellets, bloodworms, brineshrimp, and chopped earthworms. Once acclimated, they may feed from the surface and benefit from regular feeding to maintain their well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Flagtail Catfish in captivity involves simulating their natural environment, including inducing dry and wet seasons. Successful breeding requires a small group of 4-6 fish, adequate live food, and controlled environmental changes to encourage spawning. Males exhibit slightly thickened pectoral fin rays, while mature females are typically rounder in body shape.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Flagtail Catfish are primarily found away from main river channels in slower-moving bodies of water such as creeks, tributaries, lakes, and ponds within the Brazilian Amazon basin. Their distribution is limited to specific regions where the water conditions meet their requirements.
