General Description
The Chocolate Frogmouth Catfish, scientifically known as Chaca Bankanensis, is a species popular among enthusiasts of exotic aquatic creatures. Resembling its close relative, C. chaca, this species is characterized by its dark and reddish coloration, lacking the distinctive hooklets found on C. chaca. It is adept at mimicry, earning it the nickname "angler catfish" for its ability to use its barbels to lure prey by simulating the movements of a worm.
Aquarium Setup
For this sedentary species, an 80-liter tank with dim lighting and a soft, sandy substrate is ideal. Most aquatic plants struggle in these conditions, but plants like java fern and java moss that can attach to decor are suitable. Adding beech twigs and dried leaves helps replicate the fish's natural habitat.
Behaviour
Known for its predatory nature, C. bankanensis is best housed alone as it may consume fish close to its size and is capable of swallowing prey almost as large as itself. It is most active during nighttime, often remaining camouflaged during the day. Interestingly, in confinement, this species may influence water pH, possibly due to digestive enzymes or chemical secretions.
Feeding and Diet
While some individuals can adapt to dried or frozen foods, live prey like small fish, river shrimp, and earthworms are preferred by many Chocolate Frogmouth Catfish. Their potent digestive juices aid in digesting sizable prey efficiently.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding habits of C. bankanensis remain mostly undocumented in captivity, but mating likely emulates that of C. chaca. Males of the species are typically longer and slimmer compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, the Chocolate Frogmouth Catfish inhabits shady, shallow waters within rainforests, often concealed amidst leaf litter and mulm.
