General Description

The Baram Snakehead, scientifically known as Channa Baramensis, has distinct features such as a black spot in the center of numerous body scales and a barred caudal-fin pattern in larger specimens. Belonging to the family Channidae, they are commonly referred to as "snakeheads" due to the large scales on their heads resembling those of snakes. Possessing supplementary breathing apparatus, they have paired suprabranchial chambers allowing them to breathe atmospheric air, enabling survival in hypoxic conditions.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a dimly-lit aquarium with ample cover in the form of live plants, driftwood branches, and terracotta pipes is preferred for the Baram Snakehead. It is advised to create a network of nooks and shaded spots in the tank, along with surface vegetation like Ceratopteris spp. Tight-fitting covers are necessary due to their escape artistry, leaving a gap between the cover and the water surface for access to a humid air layer.

Behaviour

This fish species is known to be an obligate predator, feeding primarily on smaller fishes and insects in the wild. They can adapt to dead alternatives in captivity and might even accept dried foods, though these should not be their staple diet. Baram Snakeheads can be fed chironomid larvae, earthworms, prawns, shrimp, mussels, and more. It is crucial to avoid mammalian or avian meat, as well as feeder fish, to prevent health issues.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Baram Snakeheads predominantly prey on smaller fishes and insects. In captivity, they can adjust to consuming dead substitutes but should be offered a diverse diet. Young fish can be fed chironomid larvae, small earthworms, and chopped prawn, while adults accept fish flesh, prawns, shrimp, mussels, and worms. Avoid feeding them mammalian or avian meat and feeder fish to ensure their well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction and dimorphism of the Baram Snakehead is not provided in the available data.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Borneo, the Baram Snakehead is found throughout Sarawak state in Malaysia, as well as in western parts of Sabah state and Brunei Darussalam. Its type locality is the Baram River in northern Sarawak, Malaysia. The species is typically confined to these regions, with some records potentially indicating a closely related species, C. melasoma, in eastern Sabah's Sadong drainage.
