General Description
The Kennedy's Tetra (Astyanax Kennedyi) belongs to the Characidae family and is classified under the order Characiformes. This species, endemic to the upper Amazon basin in Peru, particularly around the city of Iquitos, reaches a maximum size of 5.0cm.
Aquarium Setup
Thriving in a typical Amazon-themed aquarium setup, this species prefers a sandy substrate, driftwood branches, twisted roots, and tannin-stained water. A few handfuls of dried beech or oak leaves add to the natural habitat effect, and the Kennedy's Tetra is also comfortable in a planted tank. Water conditions should ideally fall within a pH range of 5.5-7.0, with temperatures between 26-29°C and a water hardness of 18-215ppm.
Behaviour
The Kennedy's Tetra should not be housed with very tiny fish as it may prey on them, but it is suitable for communities of similarly-sized, peaceful species. Ideal tankmates include characins, non-piscivorous South American cichlids, and catfish from the families Callichthyidae and Loricariidae.
Feeding and Diet
In its natural environment, this tetra predominantly preys on invertebrates and smaller fishes. In captivity, a well-rounded diet should consist of plenty of small live and frozen foods, in addition to high-quality dried foods to ensure proper nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction details for the Kennedy's Tetra remain unreported in the hobby. However, sexually dimorphic traits are evident, with females possessing a rounder body shape than males, particularly when they are full of eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the upper Amazon basin in Peru, specifically around Iquitos, the Kennedy's Tetra occupies freshwater habitats within this region. Unfortunately, specific habitat details for this species are currently unavailable.
