General Description
The Blue Tetra, also called Cochu's Blue Tetra, is a strikingly colored freshwater fish found in the rivers and streams of the Amazon River Basin. Known for its vibrant blue hue with hints of pink, this peaceful shoaling fish adds a splash of color to any aquarium setting.
Aquarium Setup
To create an optimal environment for the Blue Tetra, a planted tank of at least 20 gallons or more is recommended. Aquascaping with live plants, rocks, and driftwood mirrors its natural habitat and provides hiding spots. Maintaining soft, slightly acidic water with high quality is crucial, and groupings of six or more Blue Tetras are ideal to mimic their schooling behavior (see table for tank size).
Behaviour
Recognized for its communal nature, the Blue Tetra thrives in the presence of its own kind. When in a suitable environment with compatible tank mates, they showcase active and social behavior. However, inadequate tank space or overcrowding may lead to fin nipping tendencies.
Feeding and Diet
As a herbivorous species, the Blue Tetra readily accepts various small foods including Brine Shrimp, Daphnia, Bloodworms, Tubifex, micro pellets, and high-quality flake food. A diverse diet ensures their nutritional needs are met and fosters their overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In captivity, breeding Blue Tetras is achievable in a well-maintained tank with suitable breeding conditions. During courtship, males intensify their coloration and display energetic behavior to attract females. Successful mating results in the female scattering adhesive eggs among plants for fertilization.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Amazon River Basin in South America, the Blue Tetra inhabits slow-moving waters such as rivers and streams rich in vegetation. These fish are commonly found in clear or blackwater environments and prefer locations with shaded areas due to the dense forest canopy above.
