General Description

The Bucktooth Tetra, scientifically known as Exodon Paradoxus, is a predatory fish species characterized by uniquely designed teeth that allow it to strip scales from other fish. It is an excellent choice for aquarists interested in maintaining a large shoal of a predatory species in a captivating display.

Aquarium Setup

For proper aquarium setup, a substrate of sand with the addition of driftwood branches and roots can mimic a biotope environment. However, the Bucktooth Tetra thrives best in a heavily planted tank, providing refuges to alleviate bullying. Efficient filtration is vital, especially when maintaining these fish in sizable groups. Refer to the table for specific water condition requirements.

Behaviour

This species is not suitable for community tanks and thrives in a species-only setup. Bucktooth Tetras exhibit aggressive behavior towards shiny or silver-colored tankmates, often attacking and stripping them of scales and fins. They are best kept with non-reflective or scaleless fish to minimize aggression. In large shoals, individual targeting is reduced, resulting in a more cohesive group dynamic.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Bucktooth Tetra primarily feeds on insects and other fish scales. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet consisting mainly of meaty foods like bloodworms, prawns, mussels, earthworms, and lancefish. While they can consume dried foods, a diverse diet is ideal. During feeding times, their aggressive and greedy feeding behavior is quite fascinating to observe.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Bucktooth Tetra has been achieved but is considered rare. They are egg-scattering species, with successful breeding often requiring a separate spawning tank with specific conditions. Mature males exhibit a slimmer body compared to females and may have slightly elongated dorsal and anal fin rays.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is widespread throughout the Brazilian Amazon and has been sighted in the Rio Branco and Guyana regions. Bucktooth Tetras are typically found in river sections flowing through grassland-like savannahs with sandy substrates. Their natural habitat features flowing waters and abundant plant life.
