General Description:

The Shiny Copper Tetra, scientifically known as Hemigrammus Cupreus, is not a commonly found species in the aquarium hobby, occasionally appearing as a contaminant in imports of more popular fish. Belonging to the Characidae family, its taxonomic status is currently uncertain, with the genus Hemigrammus serving as a catch-all for numerous small characin species.

Aquarium Setup:

For a suitable aquarium setup accommodating the Shiny Copper Tetra, a minimum tank size of 70 liters is recommended. The water conditions should ideally have a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.2, a temperature between 23-27°C, and a water hardness of 5-15°dH. It is advisable to maintain a peaceful tank environment with compatible tankmates, preferably other South American species. Shoaling is natural for this species, so keeping them in groups of at least 6, preferably 10 or more, is recommended for their well-being.

Behaviour:

Shiny Copper Tetras are known for their peaceful nature and thrive in the presence of their own kind or other compatible tankmates. They do not fare well with aggressive or significantly larger fish and exhibit shoaling behavior, showcasing their best colors and natural behavior when in a group.

Feeding and Diet:

Being omnivorous, Shiny Copper Tetras readily accept a varied diet comprising dried flakes, granules, small live, and frozen foods. Feeding a mix of these food types ensures their optimal nutrition and health in the aquarium environment.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

The breeding habits of Shiny Copper Tetras are largely unreported; however, they can likely be bred similarly to other species in their genus. Breeding requires a separate tank with specific conditions such as dim lighting, fine-leaved plants for egg deposition, and suitable water parameters. Adult males of the species are generally smaller, more colorful, and slimmer compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution:

With a habitat limited to the Rio Solimões in Brazil, Shiny Copper Tetras can be found in the main Amazon river section that flows through varied environments such as flooded habitats and lakes. The river's unique characteristics include cloudy, turbid water with organic sediment, supporting the diverse aquatic life found in its waters.
