General Description

The Rummy-Nose Tetra (Hemigrammus Rhodostomus) is a peaceful species commonly found in the Rio Orinoco and the lower Amazon basin in Venezuela and Brazil. It reaches a maximum size of 5.0 cm and thrives in blackwater rivers and tributaries characterized by acidic and tannin-stained water.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal coloration and well-being, it's recommended to keep Rummy-Nose Tetras in soft and acidic water (pH 5.5-7.0, 2-15°dH) at a temperature of 24-27°C. A biotope setup involving river sand substrate, driftwood, dried leaves, and dim lighting mimics their natural habitat. Alternatively, they can also flourish in well-planted tanks with regular maintenance and partial water changes.

Behaviour

Rummy-Nose Tetras are known for their shoaling behavior and should be kept in groups of at least 10 individuals. They are peaceful and do best when housed with gentle tankmates of similar size such as other South American species like Corydoras and dwarf cichlids. Their striking red coloration intensifies when kept in proper shoaling numbers.

Feeding and Diet

These tetras are omnivorous and eagerly consume a varied diet comprising dried flakes, granules, and small live or frozen foods. To enhance their coloration, it's essential to provide them with a diverse diet rich in nutrients. Due to their small mouth size, appropriately sized foods are recommended.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Rummy-Nose Tetras is achievable in a separate dimly lit tank with soft, acidic water. They can be bred in groups or pairs, with females displaying a rounder body shape than males. After spawning, adults should be removed to prevent egg predation. The fry, which hatch in 24-36 hours, require initial feeding with infusoria before transitioning to microworm or brine shrimp nauplii.

Habitat and Distribution

Natural to blackwater rivers and tributaries, Rummy-Nose Tetras are commonly found in the Rio Orinoco and the lower Amazon basin in Venezuela and Brazil. They thrive in environments with acidic water and tannin-stained brown hues resulting from decaying organic matter.
