General Description

The Hemigrammus Vorderwinkleri, a member of the Characidae family, is a small, peaceful tetra species native to the Rio Negro in Brazil. Reaching a maximum size of 4.0cm, this fish is often seen in blackwater rivers and tributaries where the acidic and tannin-stained waters provide its natural habitat. Due to taxonomic uncertainties within the genus Hemigrammus, this species is sometimes encountered incidentally among imported fish consignments, despite its attractiveness and peaceful nature.

Aquarium Setup

For this species, a minimum tank size of 70 litres is recommended. Setting up a biotope tank includes using river sand substrate, driftwood branches, twisted roots, and dried leaves to mimic its natural habitat. Aquatic plants are not crucial as this tetra inhabits waters characterized by tannins from decaying organic matter. Alternatively, a dimly lit heavily planted tank can also suit their needs, but specificity in water conditions, such as low pH levels between 5.5-7.0, hardness of 1-12 dH, and a temperature range of 23-27°C, should be maintained.

Behaviour

The Hemigrammus Vorderwinkleri is a tranquil species that thrives best in the company of its own kind, forming shoals of at least 6 individuals but preferably 10 or more. Its peaceful nature makes it incompatible with aggressive or much larger tankmates, making it ideal for community setups with other South American species like Hemigrammus, Hyphessobrycon, pencil fish, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and small Loricariids.

Feeding and Diet

In its natural environment, this species predominantly feeds on small invertebrates. In captivity, it accepts a variety of foods, including dried flakes, granules, small live, and frozen foods. Offering a balanced diet consisting of these food types helps maintain the health and vibrancy of Hemigrammus Vorderwinkleri.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding this tetra species involves setting up a separate tank with specific conditions including soft and acidic water, low lighting, and appropriate spawning materials like fine-leaved plants or mesh. Males are typically slimmer and smaller than females, with hook-shaped anal fins distinguishing them. Breeding can be achieved in groups or pairs, with fry requiring delicate care and feeding on infusoria initially.

Habitat and Distribution

Hemigrammus Vorderwinkleri is exclusively found in the Rio Negro region of Brazil, within blackwater rivers and tributaries characterized by acidic conditions and stained, tannin-rich waters from decaying organic material. This species' natural habitat influences the recommended tank setup to closely simulate its wild environment.
