General Description

The Yellow Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon Bifasciatus, is a species belonging to the Characidae family under the classification order Characiformes. These fish can grow up to approximately 4.5cm in size and are native to coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil. The species is easily recognizable by the presence of two distinct humeral spots and several other unique physical characteristics.

Aquarium Setup

To keep Yellow Tetras in an aquarium, it's recommended to maintain them in a community setting with similarly-sized peaceful fish such as characids, gasteropelecids, and small catfish. Acquiring a mixed-sex group of at least 8-10 specimens along with other schooling fish provides security and a more natural environment for the Tetras. Ensure the water conditions are within the specified range for pH, temperature, and hardness (see table).

Behaviour

These Tetras are known to be generally peaceful, making them excellent residents for a well-researched community aquarium setup. When housed with compatible tank mates and in adequate numbers, Yellow Tetras display schooling behavior and enhance the overall aesthetic of the tank.

Feeding and Diet

Yellow Tetras are considered opportunistic omnivores in their natural habitat, feeding on aquatic invertebrates and fallen fruits. In an aquarium, they readily accept various foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, Artemia, dried flakes, and granules. A balanced diet that includes live and frozen foods alongside plant-based offerings helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

These Tetras are egg-scatterers that exhibit no parental care. Adult males of the species tend to display more intense coloration when in good condition, while females typically grow slightly larger and become rounder in shape, especially during the gravid state.

Habitat and Distribution

Yellow Tetras are commonly found in floodplain tributaries, lakes, and streams under the cover of forests in southeastern Brazil. Their distribution spans from the states of Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul, extending into parts of the upper Paraná basin.
