General Description

Hyphessobrycon Brumado is a species of tetra classified under the order Characiformes. It is distinguished by its superficial resemblance to the Hasemania nana tetra, with a notable difference being the presence of an adipose fin. Additionally, it can be identified by a broad black lateral stripe that extends onto the median caudal-fin rays, lacking a humeral spot found in some species and a well-defined caudal spot primarily seen in males. The species reaches a maximum size of 3.2cm.

Aquarium Setup

The Hyphessobrycon Brumado should be housed in an aquarium environment designed to mimic its natural habitat, which includes moderately-flowing streams with substrates of rock and sand. Vegetation such as grass, shrubs, and trees is essential, and it is advisable to keep them with sympatric fish species like Astyanax aff. lacustris and Gymnotus aff. carapo. Behaviour

Feeding and Diet

The diet of Hyphessobrycon Brumado in the wild consists of filamentous algae, vascular plants, Diptera (Chironomidae and Simuliidae), Trichoptera larvae, Formicidae adults, Aranae, and unidentified arthropod fragments. When kept in captivity, they should be offered a varied diet consisting of high-quality flake, pellet, and live or frozen foods to ensure nutritional balance.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is observable in Hyphessobrycon Brumado, with some females showing a less broad lateral stripe and a more conspicuous rounded caudal blotch compared to males. Habitat and Distribution

Hyphessobrycon Brumado is exclusively found in the rio Brumado, a tributary of the rio de Contas drainage in Bahia state, eastern Brazil. It inhabits streams at altitudes ranging from 971 to 1048 meters above sea level with rock and sand substrates and riparian vegetation consisting of grass, shrubs, and trees. Notable sympatric fish species include Hypostomus sp. and Poecilia reticulata.
