General Description
The Red/Blue Columbian Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon columbianus, is aptly named for its vibrant red tail and reflective blue body. Belonging to the Characidae family, this species is an omnivorous fish with a peaceful temperament. It can grow up to 7.6 centimeters in length and is well-suited for both novice and experienced aquarists due to its ease of care.
Aquarium Setup
To provide a suitable habitat for the Red/Blue Columbian Tetra, a planted aquarium of at least 40 liters with rocks and driftwood mimicking its natural environment is recommended. The water conditions should ideally have a pH level between 6.0-6.5, a hardness of 4-8 KH, and a temperature ranging from 22.2-25.0°C. High filtration is essential for maintaining optimal water quality for this species (see table).
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful nature, Red/Blue Columbian Tetras are ideal for community aquariums. They exhibit schooling behavior and feel most secure when kept in groups of their own kind or with other similar-sized fish. This social species thrives in a harmonious tank environment with limited aggression.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Red/Blue Columbian Tetras have a varied diet that includes small foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, micro pellets, and high-quality flake food. Providing a diverse diet ensures their nutritional needs are met, promoting their overall health and vitality.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Red/Blue Columbian Tetras may breed occasionally in an aquarium setting. Setting up a separate breeding tank is advisable to protect the eggs from being eaten by the parents. Slightly acidic water conditions are favorable for breeding. Dimorphism in this species is not prominent, with both males and females displaying similar coloration.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Red/Blue Columbian Tetras are typically found in slow-moving rivers and streams in South America. They prefer densely planted areas with ample hiding spots among vegetation. Their distribution ranges across certain regions, reflecting their adaptability to various freshwater environments.
