General Description

The Purple Emperor Tetra, scientifically known as Inpaichthys Kerri, is a peaceful species with a maximum size of 3.5cm. It is often confused with the Emperor Tetra but can be easily distinguished by the presence of an adipose fin. This species is primarily found in forested areas within the Rio Aripuanã and upper Rio Madeira basins in Brazil.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable aquarium setup for the Purple Emperor Tetra, a minimum tank size of 70 litres is recommended. A biotope setup with river sand substrate, driftwood branches, twisted roots, and dried leaves can mimic its natural habitat. Aquatic plants are not necessary, and dim lighting is preferred. Alternatively, a heavily planted tank with proper maintenance is also suitable for this species.

Behaviour

Known to be peaceful, the Purple Emperor Tetra thrives best when kept with other South American species, including small tetras, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful bottom dwellers. When kept in insufficient numbers, it may exhibit fin-nipping behavior, which is usually restricted to conspecifics. Males display their best colors when in a group setting.

Feeding and Diet

This species has no special dietary requirements and accepts most prepared foods. Offering regular meals of small live and frozen foods like brine shrimp and Daphnia is recommended for optimal color and development. A varied diet is essential for their overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Purple Emperor Tetra can be achieved in a separate tank with soft, acidic water. Spawning can occur in groups or pairs, with proper conditioning and tank setup. Females are less colorful and stockier than males, with predominantly red adipose fins compared to the blue fins of males.

Habitat and Distribution

Primarily found in forested areas in sluggish tributaries off main river channels, the Purple Emperor Tetra inhabits waters stained brown with tannins. These waters are acidic due to decaying organic material. The species' distribution is limited to the Rio Aripuanã and upper Rio Madeira basins in Brazil.
